Ged Furlong knew from the time that he was a young boy that he wanted a career in the medical profession. It was a lifelong ambition that was fulfilled when he graduated from St Bartholomew’s hospital college in 1992 and went on to pursue a career as an anaesthetist working in several hospitals in England and Northern Ireland.
A career in medicine appealed to Ged for a number of reasons as not only would he be following in his father’s footsteps but he would be able to combine his love of science with a desire to help people. Ged has always been a”people person” and this has shone through in his career.
Doctor Gerard Furlong began his career on the Trauma ward at Dunganon hospital in Northern Ireland after graduating. This was during the times of the troubles in Northern Ireland and he dealt with the casualties from a number of terrorist incidents. Although he enjoyed his time working on the Trauma ward and in the ICU (intensive care unit) Ged’s true passion was for obstetrics. He enjoyed having the ability to work closely with women and ease them through the rigours of childbirth. Although initially fazed by the process of administering epidurals he soon discovered that he had a real talent for it to the great relief of thousands of pregnant women who he cared for at Coventry and Warwick hospital.
The anaesthetist Gerard Furlong is a member of several medical societies and regularly contributes articles and lends his assistance on research projects to them. They include SCATA, The Intensive Care Society and also the Difficult Airways Society.
Gerard Furlong has a number of private business interests and
when he is not working or writing he likes to spend his time sailing
in the Lake District.
